5 Things Necessary for Great Product Photos

Do you sell products online? If so, you should be able to take professional-looking photos of your goods to entice your customers and encourage them to make a purchase. With good product photos, your customers will be more confident that your goods are legitimate. Great photos also increase the legitimacy of your brand.

Although there is always something to be said about expert photography, not everyone has the budget for it. If you don’t want to hire a professional product photographer for your website shots, you can always do it yourself. Here are five things that you will need to remember when taking beautiful product photos:

1 – Invest in a good camera

If you want to take beautiful product pictures, you need to start with a good camera. Quite a number of people think that Digital single-lens reflex (DSLR) cameras will set you back several thousands of dollars. However, technology has involved and professional cameras are much more affordable than they once were. A great camera will ensure that your pictures look clear and professional. If you are not ready to pay for a DSLR camera, consider taking the photos with a good smartphone camera.

Nowadays, smartphone manufacturers have been looking to gain an edge over their competitors with impressive cameras. This means that if you have a good smartphone, you may be able to shoot high-quality photos with it! That being said, look into the specifications of your phone and see if it is able to yield the type of photos you are looking to produce. If not, consider investing in a better one.

2 – Pay attention to photography lighting

Although natural light is fantastic for photo taking, there is no guarantee that it will decide to work to your advantage on the day you decide to shoot your products. For this reason, you may want to ensure that you have an artificial lighting plan in place. Photography lighting kits are affordable and quite easy to find both online and in stores. When you receive the equipment, however, you will need to put some time into learning where to position the lights and how to use them to take great pictures. With proper lighting, it will be easier for you to edit the pictures and add depth to them.

3 – Use a tripod

When shooting product photos with nothing but your hands to stabilize your camera, chances are that the results will come out slightly crooked, blurry, or shaky. This might make your product photos look unprofessional and unappealing to your customers. A tripod can help you solve this problem. If you are planning to use a smartphone to take pictures, look into purchasing a functional tripod for your device!

4 – Set up a continuous background

A continuous background will make your product photos look more professional. Most of the time, white or grey backdrops are used to yield beautiful, high-quality results. There is no need to buy the ones that are specifically made for studio photography. You can be nice to your budget by purchasing craft paper in rolls and clipping them onto something instead. It is important to make sure that the paper rolls are long and wide enough for the product photos.

Ensure that they don’t become wrinkled before the shoot, either (unless that’s the look you are going for). If you prefer to take your photos in natural light, place the setup near a big window where sunlight shines through. If you want to use studio lighting, however, it may be better to move the setup to a dark room.

5 – Set a wide aperture

The aperture refers to an opening in your camera that lets the light in and is denoted by an “f-number.” This is the function that you can use to decide how much light you want to let it into the lens. You will need to manually set a high aperture. This means that your f-number should be on the lower end.

The recommended aperture setting is f/1.8 or f/2. That being said, the exact setting will depend on your setup and the way you are placing your product. A wide aperture will create a narrow depth of field and make your photos look sharper and more vibrant. This technique yields wonderful results, particularly when you are selling electronic products.
